Sometimes it's difficult figuring out what services are available and who
to talk to on such a large campus! The Career Center is dedicated to quality
customer service, and we are always happy to help you find what you need.

What does the Career Center do?
The Career Center is your one-stop shop for information about choosing
the major that's right for you, creating your resume, preparing for
interviews, and finding jobs and internships. Read more about services.

Where can I find SJSU's openings for staff positions?
The Human
Resources Department handles staff and faculty positions for San Jose
State University.
Who should I talk to about which classes to take?
Your academic advisor can recommend appropriate
courses for your major and career goals. To find out who your academic
advisor is, visit the website of your current academic
program.
If you are undeclared, see a GE
advisor regarding your GE requirements. While the Career Center
cannot recommend classes you should take, we are glad to help you decide
on a major or career goal. Stop by the Career Center, or check out our

What if I'm not a current student?
Individuals not affiliated with San Jose State University may purchase
Career Center services for a $50 annual fee. Read more about eligibility.
How do I choose a major?
The Career Center offers several assessment and interest tests you
can take to begin to explore which majors interest you and how they
correspond to professions.

Should I do an internship or a co-op?
Some academic departments on campus require students to complete an
internship or co-op to graduate.
Even if you're major doesn't require you have an internship, consider
that the best way to find out if you like a particular field is to get
hands-on experience in that field.
Internships and co-ops are wonderful activities to list on your resume.

What can I do with my major?
The Career Center has resources for you to explore the career paths
available to specific majors.
We have a series of major sheets that give overviews of different fields,
including the core skills needed to succeed in the profession, typical
salary ranges and success stories of SJSU graduates.

How do I choose the best grad school?
Graduate school is a significant commitment and investment of your
time, energy and finances.
Get an overview of some of the issues you should consider when you're

How do I land the perfect job?
Finding a job always depends on the general economic health of the
nation's economy and the specific conditions within given industries.
Your job search is likely to be more successful if you have a plan that
starts with knowing yourself and what interests you. The Career Center
can help you begin to identify your interests and matching career possibilities.

SpartaJOBS FAQs
SpartaJOBS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are instructions
and tips on how to access, navigate, and get the most out of SpartaJOBS.
If you cannot find the answers to your questions here,

What kinds of job listings will I find on SpartaJOBS?
SpartaJOBS offers a variety of job listings, including on- and off-campus
positions, work-study, full-time, part-time, and internship positions.
Why can't I log on to SpartaJOBS?
If you're a student, check that you're using your new university
ID number that's on the back of your Tower Card for BOTH
your username and password.
If you are an alum or community member, you should use either
your Social Security number or your Career Center ID number for your
username and password.
If you customized your password and can't remember it, click
the Forgot Password tab on the sign-in page and your password will be
emailed to you.
If you're not a currently enrolled SJSU student, you won't be
able to log in. However, you may contact the Career Center, (408) 924-6031
if you need additional assistance. Read more about eligibility.
Why should I register with the Career Center?
Career Center members are the first to receive updates and news about
Career Center events and also receive access to job and internship opportunities
exclusively for SJSU students.
Members may post five resumes online and our new online system automatically
tracks every resume you send.
Additionally, employers who are registered with the Career Center have
the option of reviewing resumes that are featured in our resume database.
There's a good chance they may contact you about possible opportunities.
Why should I post my resume online?
Keeping current versions of your resume online allow you to apply for
opportunities with the click of your mouse.
Employers are also able to view your resume when they do searches for
suitable candidates within the database.
Career Center staff also refers student resumes in the database based
on employers' requests.
We can guarantee your resume won't be referred if it's not online.

How do I access & navigate SpartaJOBS?
If you cannot easily access the Internet, come use the Career Center's
Career Resource Lab's computers.
Instructions for first-time users:
- Log on to SpartaJOBS
- Click Sign In link (top left corner of the home page).
- Click the Career Center Sign In button.
- Current students must use the number that's on the back
of your new Tower Card for BOTH your username
and password.
- Click the go button. Go to step 8.
- Alumni and others must use either a Social Security
or Career Center ID number for BOTH your username
and password.
- Click the go button.
- Complete the profile form and click the submit button.
Congratulations! You're now registered with the
Career Center.
After you create your profile:
- Go to www.careercenter.sjsu.edu
- Click the Sign In link (top left corner of the home page).
- Click the Career Center Sign In button.
- Type your username and password in the username and password
fields.
- Click the submit button.
Note: To make more than one selection in a list,
hold down the control key (Windows) or command key (Mac) on your keyboard
while selecting the desired items.

Searching SpartaJOBS
Do the following to maximize your job searches:
To access job and internship listings, click "job postings" in the header bar.
Click "Advanced Search" to create
specific criteria for your job and internship search.
- Try doing different key word searches.
For example, some listings may be found by using keyword, "writer"
while another can be found by using "writing" instead.
- Be flexible in selecting "Majors/Concentrations."
For instance, if you are a computer engineering, computer science or
MIS major, select "Computer & Information Science."
- Within the "Position Type" menu:
Choose multiple options. For example, include "Co-op," "Internship,"
and all other types of employment that interest you.
- Within the "Location" menu:
Keep in mind that different regions of the country may have more job
opportunities than others. A willingness to relocate to find work may
give you an advantage over other candidates.
- Within the "Job Category" menu:
Select as many industries as possible.

Where can I find out more about my student's major?
Helping your student determine the right career path requires a lot
of patience.
According to the SJSU Student Outreach and Recruitment Office, over
70% of all students change from one major to another while attending
college.
