Essential Reminders

Be Punctual

  • Check the date, time, and location of your interview: Arrive at least fifteen minutes early.
  • If you have to wait in the lobby, don't space out—read company materials while you wait.
  • Make sure to be courteous to the receptionist or greeter. They will offer an opinion of you too.
Introduce yourself
  • If you are given a name tag, put it high on your right shoulder; that way, while you shake hands, people can follow the line of your arm straight up to your name—without having to scan your chest.
  • If the nametag you are given asks you to write the organization you are from, write "self."
  • Be courteous, have a firm handshake, look people in the eyes, and smile.
Look interested
  • Listen.
  • Have good posture.
  • Offer affirmative gestures: smile, nod.
Wrap up
  • Ask about the next step in the process.
  • Thank the interviewer.
  • Take a business card so that you can write a thank you note later.
Follow-up

Periodically follow up in order to reconfirm your interest in the position. Write a thank you letter to anyone you have spoken to.

Keep in mind

Interviews are meant to be two-way: You are checking the employer out for a good fit also. Don't settle for a work environment you won't feel comfortable in. Review our article on Job Offers for more insights on offer evaluation.
