Getting the Interview

With all the competition from other hungry job seekers, landing a job interview can be a feat in itself. Use a variety of methods to generate interviews:

  • Have a strong resume.
Attend a resume workshop or come to Career Center's drop-in hours to have your resume reviewed.
  • Access thousands of job leads with SpartaJOBS.
  • Research employers and visit the human resources page of companies who have hired SJSU students in the past.
  • Attend the Center's job fairs and employer presentations. These events put you in direct contact with employer representatives looking for top talent. See our calendar for upcoming events.
  • Try to find someone who works for a company of interest and set up an informational interview to discuss the company, the position you want, and the work environment.
  • Or just stop by the Career Center to see how we can give you a jump-start.
Develop a "One-Minute Commercial"
Be ready at a moment's notice to present your background and strengths, the type of position you seek, and three to five major reasons why you are the best fit for the position you seek. This will impress networking contacts or recruiters at job fairs.

Use your own initiative to develop opportunities for interviews:
  • Tell everyone you are looking for work—your hairdresser, barber—everyone.
  • Check with your neighbors, family, and friends.
  • Get a referral from an instructor or advisor.
  • Apply to an internship or job your classmate told you about.
  • Do an informational interview with a professional in the field.
  • Talk to former supervisors to see if they know anyone who is hiring.
